Ground Broken on Fellwood Development

A groundbreaking was held this morning on Savannah’s Westside for the redevelopment of the Fellwood site on Richards Street.

The mixed-use, mixed-income redevelopment will offer green and affordable housing. The 27-acre site replaced the old Fellwood Homes, the first public housing project in Savannah.

The “green” factor will be part of both construction and function. Fellwood will be built with sustainable materials with high standards for energy and water use. Neighbors there will benefit from the energy efficient heating and air conditioning units and water heaters.

Phase I will include 110 affordable housing units and about five single family homes. It’s expected to be completed by April 2009, with the first neighbors moving in next summer.
